Formerly Great Britain II

Launched by HRH Princess Anne on 21st May, 1973, with the name of Great Britain II, this yacht has made racing history. Her name and reputation are known throughout the world and her outstanding achievements have stirred the pride of the British nation.

The yacht was the ultimate dream-come-true for Chay Blyth, the adventurous pioneer who sailed east-to-west around the globe. Breathtakingly beautiful, this 77ft sloop is a masterpiece of British design and craftmanship. She was constructed of fibreglass and foam sandwich to give the lightest possible displacement, hence greater speed. Designed to be the fastest yacht in the world, she was purpose built for Chay Blyth to enter – and win – the first Whitbread Round The World Race in 1973.

From the moment of her historic launch in 1973, Great Britain II’s racing successes have made her a legend in her own lifetime. Her racing honours include:

1973/4 Winner, Whitbread Round The World Race.
1975/6 Winner in 134 days, Financial Times Clipper Race to Australia. The Clipper Ship passage record, beaten by GB II in this race, and originally set in 1867 by ‘Patriach’ was 69 days out and 69 days back.
1977/8 Winner, elapsed time, second Whitbread Round The World Race.
1981/2 First British Yacht, in third Whitbread Race.
1982 Winner, elapsed time, Tall Ships Race, Falmouth-Lisbon-Southampton.
1983 Winner, elapsed time, Tall Ships Race, Travemunde-Karskrona.
1984 Tall Ships Race, St Malo-Quebec-Liverpool.
1985 Fastest ever monohull, Antigua-Azores in 11 days, average 218 miles per day.
1985/6 Beat passage time, in the fourth Whitbread Race.
1986 Winner, Brent Waker Pursuit Race.

Great Britain II has taken part in every Whitbread Round The World Race and was the first yacht to race five times around the world.
